Giving instead of the tithing law

Jonathan Brennemann writes

More reasons why tithing is one of the most destructive doctrines in the church today. Not only do most forms of tithe teaching today contradict justification by faith and dishonor what Jesus accomplished on the cross, but they tend to promote a whole system or error.

Mandatory tithing has promoted hierarchical control rather than the biblical model Jesus taught in which we are all brothers. It has promoted seeking to be served rather than servant leadership. It has exaggerated the role of the pastor and demoted other elders and ministries, even calling evangelists and missionaries "para-church."

The tithing paradigm promoted spectator church services which hinder the church from acting as the body of Christ. It has promoted unhealthy control and holding on rather than the releasing that promotes maturity. It has redefined and suppressed biblical discipleship. It has paralyzed many of God's people.

Tithing paradigms have promoted division and selfish ambition to the point where many think it scandelous to use biblical language and speak of one church in the city. It promotes different bodies with different heads, many at odds with each other, rather than one body with one head, Jesus Christ.

Demanding tithes rather than trusting the Holy Spirit to lead God's people dishonors God in so many ways.

God is making a new move on the earth, and that move is the understanding of how the Kingdom of God and the spiritual realm operate.

The old ways of functioning — rooted in church systems — are no longer effective, because the Kingdom of God cannot be confined within the walls of doctrines, structures, theology, or any form of human control. The Spirit of God moves beyond human patterns and speaks to the spirits of those who are willing to hear His voice and surrender to His unprecedented movements.

“The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not dwell in temples made by human hands. Nor is He worshiped by human effort, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else… so that they would seek the Lord, though He is not far from any one of us.”

— Acts of the Apostles
